Medicinal Herbs

The herbal component of Chinese medicine has evolved over thousands of years. Herbal medicine includes all parts of a plant (stem, roots, leaves, flowers, seeds, berries, bark, etc), minerals, shells, stones and even  animal products. Each substance has its own distinct properties and characteristics.   Understanding the complexity of each individual product, as well the interactions between them, is essential in developing an effective formula.  Many of the traditional classic formulas are still used today and serve as a base formula which can then be modified to suit the individual’s pattern of illness.

Medicinal plant and animal products can be taken internally as a decocted tea or in granule form (grain like substances that dissolve in water) or in pill form.  They can also be externally applied as a plaster to treat bruises, rashes, sprains and fractures.
