Acupuncture

Qi is the vital energy that is inherent in all things -- the life-force. It is the

basis  for all  movement  and action. In  terms  of  the human body, qi is the energy  that  flows  throughout our being  and is responsible for both physical   and  mental  function. When  the  flow  of  qi  in  the  body  is disrupted,  illness  can occur. The  two main  disturbances  of qi can be classified as 1] deficiency or lack  of qi and 2] stagnation  or impeded flow of qi.  The purpose  of acupuncture is to restore  and harmonize the

flow of qi in  the body. Acupuncture  is the  insertion of  solid, thin (almost hair-like), metal  needles into specific  sites on the  body.  These specific  sites, termed  acupoints, lie  along  specific  pathways, or channels, on the body where the qi can be accessed and  manipulated. After  determining the cause of the  energetic  imbalance  and  the  pathway(s)  affected, certain acupoints are selected f or therapeutic treatment.

While  research  has  proven  the  efficacy  of acupuncture,  how it works

within  the constructs  of  Western  medicine  is  still  unclear. The most popular theory is that acupuncture produces its effects  by regulating the nervous system.
